What Does A Period Look Like?

All periods are different and unique, just like people! They can come in different lengths, flows, and even various shades of red! Here’s all you need to know about what your period means:

Flow

It’s very normal to have a heavy flow during the first 1-3 days of your period and get lighter toward the end, but many women experience menorrhagia; an extremely heavy flow. You could have this if you’re changing your pads every hour because of how fast they fill up. This can be caused by a number of reasons, such as medications, birth control changes, or even different medical conditions. Some women can experience lighter periods and won’t have to change their pad as often. This can be caused by being underweight, lack of ovulation, or stress! No matter what your flow is, you can be ready for it with Ruby Love period-proof underwear: perfect for heavy and light periods alike!

Color

The color of your period blood can mean many different things. When the blood is bright red, that’s a sign that you are having a steady flow and this is fresh blood. Pink blood can be regular period blood mixed with cervical fluid. This can also occur when you take birth control that contains estrogen. A darker red color or even brown blood can be a sign that your period is almost over. The blood oxidizes, making it turn a darker shade. If you see this color, don’t worry!

On the other hand, if you see a color unfamiliar to your usual menstrual cycle like orange or grey, you might want to consult a doctor to make sure that everything is okay!

Length

The average period usually lasts between 4-7 days, but your period can last anywhere between 3-8 days. First off, who is the lucky person that only has to deal with their period for 3 days? Don’t we all wish we could be them? If your period is lasting longer than 8 days then it might be a good idea for you to see your gynecologist to see if there is an issue or if there is anything you can do to shorten them. To see how often you are going to get your period (your menstrual cycle length) is simple! Just count from the very first day of your period to the first day of your next period and that is how long your cycle is. The average menstrual cycle length is about 28 days, but again, every period is unique-- so it’s common if it’s more or fewer days!

Even though all periods are different, that doesn’t mean we don’t have one very important thing in common: we all need period protection! Check out Ruby Love’s huge selection of period-proof apparel!
