You’re Taking the Wrong Medication for Your Menstrual Cramps

All of us have busy lives; events we must attend, and errands we must complete, but as women the one thing we can’t really schedule is our periods. Most women don’t enjoy their period and menstrual cramps just make everything worse. There are multiple reasons why menstrual cramps are painful and can cause back pain, nausea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Some of us have tried everything — chamomile tea, hot patches, even popping a few Midol pills just to find some relief. What if we told you that you are taking the wrong medication for your period cramps, and that there are multiple ways of easing menstrual cramping?

Why Menstrual Cramps are Painful

Women usually have a hard time with abdominal pain at the beginning of their menstrual cycles. Bloating and period cramps are just some of the hurdles women go through when it’s their “time of the month.” Nausea and vomiting can also occur when a woman is menstruating and according to modern medicine there are several reasons why menstrual cramps cause millions of women pain each day. Per Medical News Today, period cramps are caused by “uterine contractions [that] inhibit blood flow to the lining of the uterus. In addition, substances known as leukotrienes are also elevated during menstruation and they may be the cause of menstrual cramps.” Because cramps have several causes and because every woman’s body is different, it’s important to pick the best medication for you.

Best Medications for Period Cramps

There are several over-the-counter drugs and pain relievers that women can take to relieve menstrual discomfort. Many women use Midol, Advil and other similar medications for their period pain. Women who suffer from Dysmenorrhea, which is the medical term for severe period cramping, turn to such medication for relief. Dysmenorrhea can affect the quality of life when their period starts — it can cause debilitating lower back pain, abdominal pain, vomiting and nausea.

Though menstrual cramps are a natural occurrence they are not completely untreatable. The Mayo Clinic also suggests that your doctor may recommend “over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, and others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve) at regular doses starting the day before you expect your period to begin. Prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as mefenamic acid also are available.” .

There are numerous ways to combat and ease abdominal pain during menstruation that don’t involve medication, though. The best remedy for period discomfort is relaxation. Relaxation can be a powerful way to gain peace of mind and ease menstrual fatigue. Women now choose to create their own oasis either by going to a spa, taking a mini-sabbatical, binging on their favorite ice-cream, or even enjoying some well needed alone time. Intense stress can worsen the cramping women feel during their period, that’s why it is wise just to take it easy and relax your mind and body; we all know you deserve it!

It is recommended that if you suffer from Dysmenorrhea or any pain during your periods that you consult with your healthcare provider. Your doctor can properly diagnose you and prescribe the right medication(s) that can address your specific needs.
