Menstrual Blood Clots - Should You Be Worried?

If you are menstruating, you may see clots in your blood that may make you feel panicky. Your immediate thought upon witnessing blood clots in your flow may be that of worry and/or whether or not you should seek medical attention. Usually the clotting is just an indication of heavy flow. Unless and until the clots are too frequent and are followed by discomfort a doctor's advise is usually not required. A few blood clots while menstruating are perfectly normal.

Are you worried at the sight of blood clots? As per some studies, it is revealed that there are various causes that can be the cause of clots during menstruation. Such as oral contraception pills. It is well documented that they are known to cause changes in the pattern of your blood flow, which may give rise to clots. Also any steroids taken regularly may be the reasons for clots as they lead to hormonal changes. If you are anemic or have low levels of hemoglobin, it is also normal for such people to experience blood clots during menstruation. If you have any of the aforementioned symptoms then you can typically assume that blood clots are normal during the menstruation period, but there are cases which need medical attention.

When should you feel the need to visit a doctor?

  • If the size of the blood clots are more than a quarter and are very thick and black in color. All these factors are indications of some problem.
  • Your menstruation days have exceeded 7 days, whereas they should last about 2-7 days in normal cases.
  • And if it is a first time for you, then there might be some hormonal changes which should be brought to the attention of a doctor at your earliest convenience.

As per the above conditions, you can easily differentiate between normal or abnormal blood clots that you have been experiencing. During the heaviest days of bleeding the body releases anticoagulants to help break down your uterine lining. Sometimes your body releases the lining too quickly which doesn't allow the anticoagulants enough time to break down the material resulting in blood clots.

So in normal circumstances just relax at home without getting worried. If the bleeding is excessive and prolonged with blood clots, it is advisable to visit a doctor. Consulting a gynecologist about the clots may further help you in dealing with such problems in the future. Panties that are specially made for women experiencing a heavy flow are now available.
