Don't Ignore The Signs

December 1, 2015

HSN designer Diane Gillman recently opened up about her own struggles with Pelvic Organ Prolapse in People magazine. For 8 years the magazine reads, Diane struggled until finally undergoing surgery. Also known as Vaginal Prolapse or Uterine prolapse it's a condition when a woman's uterus sags or slips out of its normal position. The uterus is held in place by a group of muscles and ligaments. Several factors can contribute to the weakening of these muscles and ligaments, causing the uterus to sag. Just picture your Vagina falling out and dangling between your legs. Many women ignore many of the serious signs, and constitute it as "not that serious".

Symptoms of vaginal vault prolapse include from Webmd.com:

  • Pelvic heaviness

  • Backache

  • A mass bulging into the vaginal canal or out of the vagina that may make standing and walking difficult

  • Involuntary release of urine (incontinence)

  • Vaginal bleeding

Surgery is the Only Option For Repair

Repair of a vaginal vault prolapse is done to manage symptoms such as sagging or drooping of the top of the vagina into the vaginal canal, urinary incontinence, and painful intercourse.

Vaginal vault prolapse often occurs with other pelvic organ prolapse. So tell your doctor about other symptoms you may be having. If your doctor finds prolapse of other pelvic organs or during your routine pelvic exam, that problem may also be repaired during surgery.
