Many women use birth control as a means to stop their period or regulate how often it comes. When you first get on birth control, it stops your period from coming monthly. One big reason why many women experience irregular periods is if they’ve just come off of breastfeeding. When women get pregnant, their period stops. This is because the body is getting ready to breastfeed and ovulation and breastfeeding cannot occur at the same time.
The hormone, prolactin, is responsible for producing breastmilk. While prolactin works to start breastmilk production, it actually stops ovulation. Since this tries to normalize once you are done breastfeeding, this causes irregular periods.
