Is Ovary Pain Normal?

Is Ovary Pain Normal?

Let’s talk about the body - the female body, to be specific. When it comes to women and their reproductive organs, there’s the obvious one that’s always mentioned, the vagina. While the vagina is the organ visible to the human eye, inside a woman’s body, you’d find her uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, and more.

When it comes to reproduction, it all starts in the ovaries. Located in the pelvic region, a woman’s two ovaries house the eggs that are released for fertilization. While these two organs have such a special role in the cycle of life, they can cause women a great level of discomfort. Ovarian pain can sometimes be common, but the real question is - is ovarian pain normal?

One of the most common reasons as to why women might experience ovary pain is because of their menstrual cycle. Cramping is a common side effect to a woman’s period and the cramping can occur both in her uterus and her ovaries as well. Since both are located in the same general vicinity, it’s often hard to pinpoint the exact location of the pain. As previously mentioned, the ovaries are responsible for releasing the egg for fertilization or a process simply referred to as ovulation. It is possible to experience ovarian pain during ovulation as well.

A few increasingly worrisome causes of ovarian pain are ectopic pregnancies, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts. When it comes to ovarian cysts, you’re either lucky or unlucky. The lucky women don’t experience any pain while the unlucky ones do. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled growths they appear on the ovaries.

While usually benign, these cysts can cause an extreme amount of pain in the pelvic region. Many ovarian cysts fix themselves and decrease in size on their own while some require medical procedures.

Endometriosis is another condition that can lead to pain in the ovaries. The endometrium is the lining of the uterus. It is this lining that sheds during a woman’s period. In a woman with endometriosis, this uterine lining begins to grow outside the uterus to adjacent organs which include the ovaries. This then can cause severe pain and bleeding. A dangerous cause to the increasing list of ovarian pain, endometriosis can even lead to infertility.

Ectopic pregnancy is the last reason behind ovarian pain that we’ll go over. As female anatomy would tell us, the ovaries release an egg into the Fallopian tubes where they await sperm to fertilize them. Once the egg has been fertilized, it moves into the uterus where it begins to develop. In an ectopic pregnancy, the egg attempts development outside of the uterus, usually within the Fallopian tubes. A circumstance that is extremely painful, this would cause ovarian pain and would require immediate medical attention.

Now that you’re aware of the most common reasons behind ovarian pain, you might still be wondering, “is ovary pain normal.” As explained in the reasons, the only right answer would be that it depends. Menstrual pain is common which would make ovary pain common but there are a few things to watch out for. If you’re dealing with long-term pain and excessive bleeding, it’s time to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist! Making sure your reproductive organs are healthy is just as important as the rest of your body.
