What to Eat During Each Phase of the Menstrual Cycle

What to Eat During Each Phase of the Menstrual Cycle

There go those period cravings again! When we get our periods, there are tons of foods we’d like to eat. You might prefer sweets like ice cream or cake. If you’re craving the more savory foods, you’re probably itching to get your hands on a greasy burger. While these foods might seem delicious, they’re definitely at the bottom of the list of foods to have while on your period.

Most people focus on their period and forget that their menstrual cycle is on average a 28-day process. It might be easy to find out what foods you should eat while on your period, but what about the entire month? If you’re looking for items to add to your grocery list, check out these foods to eat before, during, and after your period.

BEFORE

One thing that is exceptionally annoying about having your period is Premenstrual Syndrome. Commonly referred to as PMS, this comes with a whole list of symptoms that start hitting us before our period. You might get breast tenderness, bloating, and cramping that stay with you until the end of your period. To help prevent some of these symptoms, stay away from caffeine, salty foods, sweets, and dairy. Instead, you should drink plenty of water and keep your diet light with foods like vegetables, fruit, and fish.

DURING

Although it’s called Premenstrual Syndrome, the symptoms follow you well into your period. During this week or so, you should stay away from extremely cold foods and drinks. Cold causes muscles to constrict and this could add to those period cramps you might be experiencing. While drinking hot water seems ridiculous, especially in the dog days of summer, try room temperature beverages.

Another important aspect during your period is the fact that you’re losing iron as you bleed. In order to make sure your iron levels are continually balanced, add foods like spinach, turkey, and eggs to your grocery list!

AFTER

The foods you eat before, during, and after your period are all going to help regulate the fluctuating hormones in your body. Two things you want to consume after your period are fiber and protein. Fiber helps regulate estrogen, and you can find them packed in vegetables and whole grains. If you have a sweet tooth, fruit like raspberries and blackberries have 8 grams of fiber per cup!

Protein is great to load up on after your period, and luckily for you, there are tons of protein-rich foods that you can add to your diet. From delicious fish like salmon to the ever-present breakfast staple, eggs, there’s an endless choice of protein-based foods to fill up on during the end of your cycle.

When we have our period, we’re often not thinking about exactly what we’re putting in our bodies. When thinking about our menstrual cycle, it’s sometimes hard to remember that we’re always on our menstrual cycle, it just depends on what phase we’re in. You might be sick and tired of the symptoms that come along with being a woman, but by adding these foods to your diet, you’re sure to minimize their impact!
