Two Periods in One Month: Should I Be Worried?

You’ve been counting the days until your next period, haven’t you? You’re probably expecting it to come once every month, but uh-oh. It seems that this month, you’ve been hit with your period twice. When something irregular happens, it’s our first instinct to panic and think that something is wrong. While you could be right, that’s not always the case! There are numerous reasons why you could receive your period twice in one month and they range on the spectrum from good to bad. So should you be worried? The answer is – it depends!

If you’ve received your period twice in one month or are hoping to prepare yourself in case it happens in the future, below we’ve listed some of the most common reasons why you can experience a period twice in one month and which you should worry about.

SHOULDN’T WORRY: Short Menstrual Cycle

You’ll often hear that the average length of a menstrual cycle for a woman is 28 days. This average leads many young girls to believe that this is the number of days they should experience between each period. While this number is accurate, a woman’s menstrual cycle can range from 21 to 35 days. Because of this, women who experience shorter menstrual cycles can expect to experience two periods if their first period falls within the early days of a new month.

SHOULD WORRY: Pregnancy

While this isn’t something you need to “worry” about, you should definitely know if you’re pregnant. Often times when women get pregnant, they’ll experience spotting. The amount of blood should not be the same as a normal period. This spotting occurs upon implantation when the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterine lining. If you’re experiencing spotting, it would be a good time to schedule an appointment with your OB/GYN.

SHOULD WORRY: Miscarriage

If you’re experiencing heavy bleeding twice in one month, it is possible that your body could be experiencing a miscarriage. While pregnancy is often associated with spotting, the body will expel a heavier amount of blood during a miscarriage. This is because after the body detects the miscarriage, the uterus begins expelling its contents. This is another sign to call your gynecologist.

SHOULD WORRY: Sexually Transmitted Infection

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have their own list of issues, but you probably didn’t know that you can add vaginal bleeding to the list of some. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are two STIs that can cause inflammation of the uterus which in turn can lead to vaginal bleeding. This is another serious situation where you would need to contact your gynecologist.

All in all, there are a ton of reasons why women can experience two periods in one month. Beyond the above list, you’ll find circumstances like stress and traveling in addition to body changes like perimenopause. Beyond the excuse of having a short cycle, if you’ve experienced two periods in one month, it won’t hurt to double check with your gynecologist to make sure you’re healthy!
