What is menstruation?

Menstruation, also known as your period, is the monthly bleeding that occurs as part of a woman’s menstrual cycle. While the typical duration of a menstrual cycle is 28 days, variations are common, ranging from 21 to 35 days. The menstrual cycle commences with the onset of your period. Throughout the cycle, the body undergoes preparations for potential pregnancy, shedding the uterine lining through vaginal discharge. Each individual experiences unique characteristics of their menstrual cycle; some may have lighter periods, while others may endure longer durations with heavier flows. Typically, periods last anywhere from 3 to 7 days, constituting the initial phase known as the menses phase.

The follicular phase

The follicular phase initiates at the onset of your menstrual cycle and extends until ovulation, marking the final stage. Throughout this phase, estrogen levels escalate, facilitating the growth and thickening of the uterine lining. Within the follicular phase, a fully mature egg gradually develops within the ovaries, priming the reproductive system for fertilization.

Ovulation

Ovulation usually takes place around day 14 of the menstrual cycle. At this crucial stage, a surge in hormones triggers the release of an egg from the ovary, setting the stage for potential conception.

The luteal phase

The concluding phase of the menstrual cycle, known as the luteal phase, typically spans from approximately day 15 to day 28. During this critical period, the released egg embarks on its journey through the fallopian tubes towards the uterus. If fertilization occurs, signaling the commencement of pregnancy. However, if the egg remains unfertilized, the uterine lining sheds, initiating the menstrual period.
