Why Some Girls Get Their Period After 15 Years of Age

The teen years can be difficult — for both teens and parents. Physical changes during puberty can make adolescents feel awkward and unsure of themselves. For a girl, getting her first period is a physical milestone and a sign of becoming a woman. It also can be confusing and scary, particularly if she has certain problems like irregular periods.

Girls go through puberty at different rates. Some start their menstrual cycle as early as 8 or 10 years old. Others don't have their first periods, or menarche, until they're well into their teen years. So if you are a "late bloomer," it doesn't necessarily mean there's something wrong.

Menstruation can be confusing, just like a lot of the other changes that come with puberty. Some girls can't wait to start their periods. Others may feel afraid or anxious. Many girls at any age still don't have a complete understanding of a woman's reproductive system or what actually happens during the menstrual cycle. Girls usually start to go through puberty between the ages of 8 and 13. Their bodies and minds change in many ways. Hormones kick off changes like growth and breast development. About 2 to 2½ years after a girl's breasts begin to develop, she usually gets her first menstrual period.

What Causes a Girl to Have Her First Period Late

Genetics plays a big role in determining when girls get their menarche. Girls often start menstruating at about the same age at which their mothers or grandmothers did. Also, certain ethnic groups, on average, go through puberty earlier than others. For instance, African-American girls generally start puberty and get their periods before Caucasian girls do. It is all about your surroundings. A girl who has not had her first period by the age of 15 has what is called primary amenorrhea. This is different from infrequent or light menstrual cycles, which are very common in teen girls, particularly in the first couple of years after their cycle begins. Primary amenorrhea is completely okay, it is the absence of periods. Amenorrhea can be caused by any number of changes in the organs, glands, and hormones involved in menstruation. Things like low or high weight, stress, intense exercise and medicines that may have damaged ovaries all can play a huge role in the reason why a girl receives her first period in her late teens.

Every female receives her first period eventually, just remember nothing is wrong with you if you haven't received it yet even if you're in your late teens. Adulthood can wait, enjoy your childhood years for as long as you can because once they're gone... time can not rewind.
